When you use the script: defaults write com.apple.dashboard mcx-disabled -boolean YES; killall Dock Dashboard still exists as a component of Dock.app, and a standalone app in /Applications. It can still be invoked by hotkey, or by directly launching either app. The way I disable dashboard in Tiger is to run the following script: #!/bin/sh mkdir -p /Library/polo/disabled/Dock cp -R /System/Library/CoreServices/Dock/Contents/Resources/Wid* /Library/polo/disabled/Dock/ rm -R /System/Library/CoreServices/Dock/Contents/Resources/Wid* cp -R /System/Library/CoreServices/Dock/Contents/Resources/wid* /Library/polo/disabled/Dock/ rm -R /System/Library/CoreServices/Dock/Contents/Resources/wid* cp -R /System/Library/CoreServices/Dock/Contents/Resources/Dash* /Library/polo/disabled/Dock/ rm -R /System/Library/CoreServices/Dock/Contents/Resources/Dash* cp -R /System/Library/CoreServices/Dock/Contents/Resources/dash* /Library/polo/disabled/Dock/ rm -R /System/Library/CoreServices/Dock/Contents/Resources/dash* cp -R /Library/Widgets /Library/polo/disabled/ rm -R /Library/Widgets cp -R /Applications/Dashboard.app /Library/polo/disabled/ rm -R /Applications/Dashboard.app chmod -R 700 /Library/polo/disabled for i in $( ls /Users/ ); do fn=$i if test ${i:FIRST:1} != "." -a $i != "Shared"; then cp -R /System/Library/User\ Template/English.lproj/Library/Preferences/com.apple.dock.plist /Users/$i/Library/Preferences/com.apple.dock.plist; cp -R /System/Library/User\ Template/English.lproj/Library/Preferences/com.apple.symbolichotkeys.plist /Users/$i/Library/Preferences/com.apple.symbolichotkeys.plist; chown -R $i /Users/$i/Library/Preferences; fi Done # end script The Dashboard hotkey must be turned off too. If you leave the Dashboard hotkey active after removing/deleting Dashboard, the Dock will crash and relaunch when you press the hotkey. It doesn?t seem to have any ill effect other than an annoying ?blinking? of the dock. The ?for? statement at the end copies a hotkey plist from the user template to all existing home folders. The script was written before I adopted Casper and was a postflight script in a .pkg that put the plist into the User Template. A .dmg package containing the plist and set to FUT and FEU would accomplish the same thing, but you?ll still need the rest of the script to perform the Dashboard-ectomy. Computer Specs: Intel Core 2 Duo 2.4, with the X3100 graphics card (Newest Mac Book) The issue we are having with this newest batch of notebooks, is that when we try to push Leopard to them via Casper the image fails. After the imaging process appears to complete and then reboot, the system hangs. Looking into it further, by booting via a firewire drive we noticed that the full system does not copy onto the computer. The only thing on the drive is the Library folder. If we use a disk copy and image via firewire or just do a standard DVD install, the OS works just fine. So it appears that its something during the Casper push. We have used this configuration on other Intel Macs and it works as it should. It's just this most recent batch that this has started. We have tried building a new image (built on the new MacBooks), loading that into the JSS directory and using that. Exact same results.. I also checked for firmware updates on the machines. None were available. Has anyone else seen this?? Smart groups are a fantastic tools and if your network is logically segmented and you will have little problem organizing along building lines. For finer control you would then need to segment those smart groups. My master CasperShare is running from a 10.4 Xserver with Xraid though, so all the new Xserve has is the JSS db and a secondary CasperShare. We are waiting for the Java tomcat to run in 64-bit mode which can then take advantage more RAM for tomcat. Things have been better since switching to this new server and 10.5.2. I think it is more the hardware than the OS that improved the response times. Otherwise, stable. My NetBoot 10.5.2 image is working OK. occasional problems and I still can't turn off spotlight on it. # sudo mdutil -i off / I think I have problems booting eMacs from the Leopard netboot too. If so then as larger packages get expanded to be installed they take up space on that drive temporarily. For example...if you have a large package like Creative Suite 3. The solution...bigger Restore partitions, or don't cache packages. We increased our Restores from 10GB to 25GB a while back...this will also help when you move to Leopard. If you aren't caching...no idea accept maybe a VERY large package you deploy. Unless you re-image large numbers of machines at one time, like labs, or don't have large amounts of bandwidth to your file server for the JSS, then caching isn't really necessary IMO. We actually started to not put on a Restore partition in our faculty office installs since NetInstall images do what we need them to for imaging on a one at time basis as they typically are. Labs still use a restore so I don't kill the file server when I launch a lab of 30 machines, at least when there aren't many package changes since last time. =) Hope that helps. Did forget to clarify a couple of items in my original post which you brought up. They are: * no packages are being cached. * in the last instance I?ve run across this issue I had Final Cut Pro as part of the configuration. I?ve run across this issue before without Final Cut Pro too. * I was only imaging one machine, not a whole lab. * Working on getting away from using Restore partition as soon as I can setup a SUS. Thanx From: "Ernst, Craig S." Date: Sat, 15 Mar 2008 22:44:43 -0500 To: Casper List Subject: Re: [Casper] Imaging from Restore Partition Are you caching packages? If so then as larger packages get expanded to be installed they take up space on that drive temporarily. For example...if you have a large package like Creative Suite 3. The solution...bigger Restore partitions, or don?t cache packages. We increased our Restores from 10GB to 25GB a while back...this will also help when you move to Leopard. If you aren?t caching...no idea accept maybe a VERY large package you deploy. Unless you re-image large numbers of machines at one time, like labs, or don?t have large amounts of bandwidth to your file server for the JSS, then caching isn?t really necessary IMO. We actually started to not put on a Restore partition in our faculty office installs since NetInstall images do what we need them to for imaging on a one at time basis as they typically are. Labs still use a restore so I don?t kill the file server when I launch a lab of 30 machines, at least when there aren?t many package changes since last time. =) Hope that helps. I am not quite sure how their licensing works. However, it seems to be subscription based and I am not sure if I like the idea of that. I almost would rather just take care of it in-house instead. To be honest, I just wish the JSS had a work order tick system built into it, to make things easier....*cough*hint - hint*cough* So, as of now we are managing inventory between buildings, transfers, and things out for repair by a spread sheet, which is not efficient in my mind at all. I just want a web based ticket system to track everything, so for example if machine 01234 is broken and goes out for repair, I just create a work order ticket for 01234 and assign it to the repair center for repair and issues spare 98877 to the user, and everything is all in one trackable work order. Anyone got any feedback on a solution that isn't subscription based? I just could slap it on any old server and make a web front end, or better yet just use a prebuilt web front int for it, and go?
