But if it's a place like us where we have over 2000 printers, and they
change every month, it is impossible to manage, so we allow all users to
setup printers.

That’s what we decided to start implementing. As Cisco has basically
stopped supporting AppleTalk, Self Service basically becomes a replacement
for AppleTalk browsing to end users looking for printers. Just have to
manage properly scoping them.

Why not add the printers in casper admin and then make a self service
policy that users can install them self?

[Casper] Allow Non-Admin Users to Add Printers in Leopard

There was a fairly lengthy discussion on how to do this by editing the
cupsd.conf file to allow non-admins to add printers. I'd post the relevant
pieces, but it is better to read the entire article.

Right, I read this last week. However my department wants this done via a

Take a look at Apple's KB article with respect to 10.5.7

They allow for this via group access.

There are options in the cupsd.conf to make many of the printing options
require (or not require) admin access. I think thats one of the options.

I'm working on a base image and I figured out the CUPS for the pause
printing etc. But how do I unlock the preference pane so anyone can add a
printer? I changed permissions on the preference pane file and that didn't
work.
